Hawi was shortlisted for Best Graphic Novel award by the prestigious African Speculative Fiction Society, ranking in the same category as Marvel’s Black Panther.
The Axumite Empire, one of four world powers of the 3rd century, ruled East Africa for 900 years. Their fall came at the hands of warrior-queen Yodit Gudit: East Africa’s Atilla. Hawi is inspired by this fearsome figure shrouded in legend and supernatural folklore.
As a major trading hub, Axumite Empire was home to diverse groups of cultures with rich histories and self interests. Hawi must navigate through their power struggles, traditions and the unique landscape of ancient Ethiopia to save her mom.
At it’s core, Hawi is a heartfelt Ethiopian immigrant story. She is yanked from her safe, routine & family-centric life, and thrust into a new unfamiliar world. To survive, she must face her fears and trust in herself.
Hawi is made by an all-African creative team and published by a Black-Owned publisher. By choosing Hawi, you empower Black and international artists to express & share their art unapologetically.
Written by Beserat Debebe (Jember, Zufan), Art by Stanely Obende (Burna Boy’s ‘The Secret Flame’) and Ringo nominated Colorist Toyin Ajetunmobi.
